New Anti-Bullying Measures such as Bulk Comment Actions and Mention Controls added by Instagram

In order to enable users to have a more controlled experience and reduce the impact of trolls on the
mental health and minimize the abusive actions on the platform, Instagram has come up with brand
new anti-bullying tools. The tools and theirs functions can be listed as:

I) Instagram is preparing to introduce a new bulk comment removal option that shall aid to easily
manage and maintain the comment streams of the post.

Instagram conveys, “We know it can feel overwhelming to manage a rush of negative comments, so
we’ve been testing the ability to delete comments in bulk, as well as block or restrict multiple accounts
that post negative comments. Early feedback has been encouraging, and we’ve found that it helps
people, especially with larger followings, maintain a positive environment on their account.

This tool was under operation since March, and has seen to share effective results from the initial tests
which gives a thumbs up for this tool to be declared functional.

In order to delete multiple comments/bulk block accounts, one can follow the given steps:

  • Tap on a comment and then the dotted icon in the top right corner
  • Select ‘Manage Comments’ and choose up to 25 comments to delete at once
  • Tap ‘More Options’ to block or restrict accounts in bulk

Besides this, Instagram is working on a new option that shall enable users to pin the comments that are
considered positive and impressive by them within their post reply streams.

“This feature gives people a way to set the tone for their account and engage with their community by
pinning a select number of comments to the top of their comments thread”, according to Instagram.
This can be an option to encourage, focus and highlight the positive interactions by overshadowing the
negative comments. The number of comments that can be pinned on each post has not been disclosed
yet, but undergoing a test involving some users.

2) Instagram is also adding new tag controls in order to filter the mentions on the account of users. It
shall help to reduce bullying that goes around by some users to threaten others on the platform.

Now, the users shall be able to opt whether they want everyone to be able to tag them, only the people they
follow, or no one at all. They also shall be provided to choose the “Manually Approve Tags” option which
will help to maintain more specific control in accordance to this issue.

Facebook’s latest Transparency Report covers all the content actions undertaken on Facebook and
Instagram over the past three months, followed by these updates.

Facebook has made tremendous useful updates within the past months and further claims that it has
improvised its text and image matching capacity on Instagram. This update is necessary with a social
point of view as it enables to detect more suicidal thoughts and self-injury content, which has
subsequently increased the amount of content that it’s taken action on by 40%. Improvements have also
been made to its hate speech detection and removal processes to create a safe and sound platform for
the users.

include warnings on potentially offensive captions and comments and new tools to restrict modes of
interaction with the user’s posts. It is also trying to test hiding like counts in order to reduce social
anxiety.
